Welcoming overnight guests to your home is much more manageable when you have a separate place for them to stay. A guest suite can help you host family and friends in comfort, while avoiding the awkwardness associated with sharing space. Here’s a look at five houses on the market that help you offer visitors an inviting home away from home.




6 Clover Meadow Court

The owners of this five-bedroom Colonial created the guest suite so they could host faraway family members for extended stays, says listing agent Jodie Orlando of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. Orlando says they converted the garage to a guest suite that has a bedroom area with an architectural arch, a full bathroom with a marble-topped vanity, an office and sitting area and its own side entrance. The 1998 home overlooks a pond in a gated community, Orlando says, offering 3 1⁄2 new bathrooms and a renovated kitchen featuring stainless steel appliances, granite counters and a center island. There’s a formal dining room, formal living room and a family room with a fireplace. The 3,000-square-foot home has cherry hardwood floors, a second-floor master suite and a finished basement with 8-foot ceilings and a media room. The quarter-acre property is on a cul-de-sac, featuring a paver patio and a sprinkler system. Residents have use of the community pool and tennis courts as well as a clubhouse and an on-site day-care facility. The taxes are $12,343 and the homeowner association fees are $208 a month.

This center-hall Colonial was expanded to include a generously sized guest suite above the garage, says listing agent Deborah DeWick of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. Dual staircases access the suite, which includes a bedroom, a full bath and a 22-by-22-foot bonus room where DeWick says the family keeps a sectional sofa and pool table. Down one staircase is an office with its own entrance, and the other leads to the family room in the main house. The 1990 home has five bedrooms and 3 1⁄2 baths, a formal dining room and a living room with a fireplace. DeWick says the kitchen has been renovated to include white oak cabinets, stainless steel appliances, granite counters, a center island and a breakfast nook. The 3,000-square-foot home also offers Brazilian cherry floors, a skylight and a finished basement. DeWick says the home has is an enclosed porch with a high wooden ceiling, a Casablanca-style fan and an indoor summer kitchen for entertaining — all overlooking the property’s saltwater pool. The secluded guest suite is just one of the draws of this “luxuriously appointed” Postmodern, says listing agent Antoinette Terlizzo of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. Terlizzo says the suite is set apart from the main residence, providing a private retreat for guests. It’s brightened by large windows, Terlizzo says, and features hardwood floors, a tiled bathroom with an oversized shower and pedestal sink and its own entrance off the deck. The inside entrance opens to a hallway that leads to the spacious eat-in kitchen, Terlizzo says, which features custom cherry cabinets, gourmet stainless-steel appliances and a granite island and counters. The 2005 home has six bedrooms and three full baths, with a formal dining room, formal living room and a family room with a fireplace. The 3,600- square- foot residence also features a master suite with a spa bath and skylights and a full basement with egress windows and an outside entrance. The .43 acre property has a screened-in porch and a two-car garage, Terlizzo says, and comes with “all the pleasures of North Fork living,” including access to a private beach and marina. Nestled in a “country setting,” this Contemporary's guest suite has played host to more than a dozen grandchildren, says listing agent Susan Giglio of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. Giglio says the owners love the chance to host family and friends in the suite that features built-in bookcases, a walk-in closet and a window seat. The suite also offers a sitting area, a full bath and a separate front entrance. “It’s a warm and welcoming home,” Giglio says, featuring custom woodwork, hardwood floors, Pella windows and geothermal heat. The 1980 home offers a living room, formal dining room and a sunny eat-in kitchen with skylights. The two-story family room has a fireplace and a wall of sliding glass doors to the deck that Giglio says help residents to enjoy the outside from inside. The home has six bedrooms and three full baths — including a second-floor master suite with a large soaking tub — as well as a mudroom and a finished basement. There’s a two-car garage on the 1.9-acre property, and the backyard features a large, multilevel deck and gazebo, Giglio says, overlooking the “parklike” grounds. The taxes are $25,147.

Guests staying at this hilltop Colonial are treated to a room with a view, says listing agent Catherine Cronin of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. Cronin says the guest suite has a private entrance, a sitting room and full bath — and the bedroom has sliding glass doors to a private deck overlooking the wooded property. The 1980 home offers an open floor plan with a newly renovated kitchen featuring granite floors and counters, a formal dining room, a great room and a living room with a fireplace. There are five bedrooms and three updated bathrooms — including a spa bath in the second-floor master suite. The home features skylights, hardwood floors and 3,100 square feet of living space — and Cronin says there’s an abundance of outdoor amenities as well. The owners built a barn and paddock on the 2.27 acre parcel, which is zoned for two horses. The property also features a solar-heated pool, a deck, inground sprinklers and a two-car garage, and it comes with beach and dock rights. The taxes are $23,549.

The guest wing at this custom-built Colonial offers a private bath, two large closets and hardwood floors, says listing agent Raffaela Caridi of Roxx Realty. Caridi says it’s an appealing space for hosting friends and family, and the private suite would be ideal for use as nanny’s quarters. The five-bedroom home was built in 2000, Caridi says, with 3 1/2 baths and an eat-in kitchen with limestone counters, Thermador appliances and three sinks. There’s a formal dining room, a formal living room and a great room with a fireplace. Caridi says the master suite is “exquisite and enormous,” with its own bathroom and a sitting area she describes as “a retreat room.” The 2,200-square-foot finished basement has 9-foot-ceilings, a gym and a media room and its own outside entrance. The house is equipped with an air-filtration system, Caridi says, and has a surround-sound system inside and out. There’s an in-ground pool and a three-car garage on the .87-acre, cul-de-sac property, which is next to the Pine Hollow Country Club. The taxes are $20,230.
