An awning is usually an afterthought on a house, but properly placed the shade they offer can turn a deck, pool or patio into a summer haven. Here is a list of homes that are on the market with awnings.

Mattituck

3615 Deep Hole Dr.,  $585,000

Designed for outdoor entertaining, this 120-by-180-foot property features an in-ground pool and a guest cabana, as well as an outdoor kitchen and lounge area, which is covered by a large awning with fans.

The covered area is accessible from the kitchen and the den. The updated seven-room ranch features skylights, some wood floors and a newer kitchen. The layout also has a four-season sunroom, as well as three bedrooms and two full bathrooms.

Amenities include a finished basement with a separate laundry room, central air-conditioning, in-ground sprinklers and a detached 1½-car garage. Wineries and beaches are nearby.

Bethpage

9 Manchester Dr., $650,000

The homeowner of this 10-room high-ranch said the best thing he ever did was to have this retractable awning installed over his deck, noting it provides shade from the blazing sun. The brown and beige striped awning covers the top tier of a two-tier deck.  The 77-by-130-foot landscape also includes an above-ground pool.

Located near Bethpage State Park and its five golf courses, this house features an open floor plan with wood floors. The layout includes an eat-in kitchen with granite countertops, skylights and high-hat lighting, a formal dining room, living room and family room. There are four bedrooms and three updated bathrooms.

Lindenhurst

4 E. Beach Promenade, $529,000

Overlooking the Great South Bay across to Kismet, this seven-room beach house has two decks with water and bridge views, including one with a retractable awning. The awning covers about a third of the main deck, which is set above the two-car garage.

The other sun deck, off the third-floor master suite, offers views of the Fire Island Lighthouse.

Interior features include a granite floor on the first level, where there is a hot-tub room, an office, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The second and third levels have bamboo flooring.

The kitchen, dining room, family room and a half-bath are on the second floor, and the master suite is on the third floor. The house was built in 2004 on pilings.

Amenities include three-zone central air-conditioning, an outdoor shower and a shed.
