If you want a house with a master suite

When the homeowners renovated and enlarged this Garden

When the homeowners renovated and enlarged this Garden City house in 2007, they created a special master suite on the second floor with radiant heat floors and surround sound, a listing agent said. The house is listed in June 2015 for $1,899,000. Credit: Daniel Gale Sotheby's International

What's sweet about a master suite is it's not just about slumber. Many are spacious enough that they can serve as a retreat. Some have fireplaces, sitting areas, private balconies, sound systems and, more likely than not, a built-in television. Walk-in closets keep things organized while spalike bathrooms with steam showers, garden tubs and hot tubs can inspire chill-out time.

Regardless of size and amenities, master suites are quickly becoming a prerequisite for many house hunters, especially the younger set, agents say.

"I find more and more buyers are asking for master suites," says Kathleen Lucchesi of Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, who with Christine Cudahy is marketing the Garden City house on these pages.

Here are five homes with master suites that are on the market.

Garden City, 82 Brook St., $1.899 million

When the homeowners renovated and enlarged this home in 2007, they say they wanted to create a special master suite, says one of the listing agents. Situated on the second floor, the space has a vaulted ceiling that is 20 feet at the highest point. From the bedroom, a long hallway with a custom closet leads to a spa bathroom. The entire suite has radiant heated floors as well as a Bose surround sound system. (There are another three bedrooms and two bathrooms on this floor.)

Now 10 rooms, the Colonial also features a great room and a banquet-size breakfast room, where French doors open to a private yard. French doors also grace the dining room, while a fireplace accents the living room.

Outside, the 75-by-150-foot property is landscaped with a large slate terrace and mature plantings. Taxes are $27,608. Kathleen Lucchesi and Christine Cudahy, Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, 516-320-0802 and 516-238-8768, respectively.

Nissequogue, 11 Pheasant Run, $1.650 million

About 22 by 29 feet, the master suite in this two-story home has a vaulted ceiling with beams and recessed lighting. One wall is lined by closets, while the other has all windows and a door that opens to a long, private balcony overlooking a bucolic two-acre property. Back inside, the owners created a sitting area in the center of the room. The suite also has a big closet and a bathroom with a pedestal sink, a hot tub and steam shower.

An office adjoins the suite, while a spiral staircase leads to the gym. Other features of the 5,000-square-foot home include walls of windows (some with views of the Long Island Sound), wood floors, two fireplaces and a theater room with a bar.

Outside, there are gardens and paths in the woods, plus a walkway to the water. Taxes, including an additional village tax, are $29,439. Bonnie Glenn, Coach Realtors, 631-584-3950.

Merrick, 2837 Shore Dr., $1.599 million

Nikon at Jones Beach Theater is visible from the master suite of this five-level waterfront house. With more than 1,000 square feet of living space, the master -- set up with a sleeping area and a sitting area -- is on the top floor, with lots of windows. It also has a spacious walk-in closet and marble bathroom with radiant heat. There are another four bedrooms and three bathrooms in the house.

The layout provides privacy on the bedroom levels and an open floor plan on the lower levels that can accommodate both large and small gatherings, says the homeowner, who is selling the house. The modern eat-in kitchen has radiant heat as well. Central air-conditioning, a central vacuum system, a sound system and a finished basement are among the amenities.

Outside, the property -- on a little over a third of an acre -- has panoramic bay views and is landscaped with plantings and an in-ground pool. Taxes are $27,500. Howard Pollack, homeowner, 516-356-0988.

Glen Head, 100 Glen Cove Dr., $849,000

Set on a hill, this updated Colonial has a second-story master suite with a balcony offering winter views of the Glen Head Country Club golf course. Not counting the dressing room and two walk-in closets, the bedroom is 27 feet by 20.5 feet. Wood floors, a vaulted ceiling, an oversized Palladian window and a brick bump-out lend character.

The master bathroom is set up with a double vanity, hot tub and a shower. There are another two bedrooms and a second bathroom on the floor. (There are five bedrooms and four bathrooms in all.) The first floor includes a living room with a fireplace, a den with a fireplace, an office with French doors, a dining room with a wet bar and an eat-in kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances.

Wood floors and recessed lighting are among the appointments. Amenities include a finished basement. Outside, there's a deck and patio. The property size is 181 by 133 feet. Taxes are $21,040. Richard Stein, Douglas Elliman Real Estate, 516-708-6001.

Wading River, 70 Creek Rd., $879,700

To maximize views of the Long Island Sound from the master suite, the owners of this beachfront Contemporary got creative. They had a wall taken down to add a sunroom, says one of the listing agents. They also added a small deck off the sunroom. The master also has a gas fireplace and a bathroom with a hot tub. (There are another three bedrooms and two full bathrooms.)

Renovated about five years ago, the 2,000-square-foot house with water views from every room, has wood floors, recessed lighting and a second fireplace. The layout includes a living room and dining room combination and a kitchen with granite countertops. A second sunroom is off the kitchen.

Amenities include central air-conditioning and access to a private beach. Taxes are $15,712. Joy Bryant and Peggy LoScalzo, Little Bay Realty, 631-929-8400.
