Happen to notice that there are a lot of open houses this weekend? That's no coincidence. It’s Realtor Nationwide Open House Weekend, which will take place from coast to coast April 28 to 29.
“If you are interested in purchasing a home, visiting open houses is a great way to get an idea of what you can afford in certain neighborhoods, as well as a taste for what is on the market,” says Don Scanlon, president of the Long Island Board of Realtors.
So who typically attends open houses? Forty-five percent of buyers do, according to the 2011 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, a study conducted by the National Association of Realtors. The study breaks it down even further: Women are more likely to use open houses in their search as are those who are foreign born. Ditto for those whose primary language is not English.
The report also revealed that older buyers as well as buyers with higher incomes are more likely to go to an open house.
While you’re getting your search on this weekend, find out how to enter a sweepstakes to win a $250 gas gift card. The Long Island Board of Realtors is giving away two on Long Island — one in Nassau and one in Suffolk. The winner will be notified May 1, via telephone.
