Report: 714 new LI foreclosures in January

Long Island accounted for 30 percent of the state's newly-filed foreclosure cases in January, while New York City's share was 45 percent, RealtyTrac data show.

Its report released Feb. 10 shows the Island had 714 new cases, which can take two years to wind through the courts, and the city had 1,061 cases. Together, downstate New York accounted for almost 76 percent of the state’s 2,339 new cases in January.

That may sound like a lot, but of course, Long Island and New York City have the biggest portion of the state's population and mortgages.
