Restored five-bedroom house in Brightwaters

On the market for $949,000, this five-bedroom, 31/2-bath Brightwaters house was restored by the owner according to the original property plans, which date to the early 1900s, says listing agent Margaret Smith of Meg Smith and Associates.

The white stucco finishing on the exterior and the woodwork are reminiscent of an older time. Gargoyles also overlook and guard the property, which is on the man-made Grand Concourse canal, while slim pillars seemingly support the home's interior. The house also comes with intricate moldings and plasterwork, some of which looks like scrolls melting into the wall, Smith says.

One of the kitchen walls has the house's original subway tiles and porcelain farm sink, Smith says. Meanwhile, there is modern lighting as well as stainless-steel appliances.

Outside, the house has three balconies, including one that is a "Rapunzel-type balcony" in the front, Smith says.

WINE & CHEESE OPEN HOUSE

House hunters, if Centre Island has been on your radar, grab your significant other and check out the twilight open house wine and cheese reception at 117 Center Island Rd. The May 8 event, from 4 to 7 p.m., is not only an opportunity to view this 5,500-square-foot home listed for $2.495 million, but a chance to check out the homeowner's artwork, which will be on display.

Even though the house was built in 2001, it looks like an old manor home, says listing agent Gail Marchbein of Coach Realtors, adding it was designed by architect Brian Shore. Shore, whose office is in Locust Valley, is known for his luxury designs throughout Long Island, Westchester, Connecticut, New Jersey and Florida.

Interior features include high ceilings as well as moldings, built-in bookcases and two fireplaces.

The 3-acre property is landscaped in part with a heated in-ground pool and a brick courtyard.

As for the homeowner, artist Nanci Allen, her style is abstract and her medium is acrylic. Allen, who has a studio in Centre Island, is also a published poet and lyricist. She is currently working on the illustration of two children's books.--LISA DOLL BRUNO
