Rich cribs: All this and a batting cage

Spring is here and the boys of summer have taken to the field. That alone may inspire the occupants of this 2.75-acre Old Brookville estate to head to the batting cage to work on their own swings.

Enclosed with netting, the batting cage has a pitching machine with an adjustable arm so one can practice both swing and timing.

The estate, which is on the market for $2,999,000, also has a lighted tennis court, a basketball court and a handball court as well as an in-ground pool, a hot tub, cabana and outdoor shower.

"The owner is very sports-oriented," says listing agent Irene Saunders of Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

The grounds also boast a dog run, an outdoor screened room and a three-bedroom cottage.

As for the main house, it features an entrance foyer with herringbone wood floors, French doors, a gourmet kitchen and a den with a hand-painted mural and stone fireplace.

Of 11 rooms, there are five bedrooms as well as 51/2 bathrooms. And there is more play space in the basement, which is equipped with a pool table and a card table along with a jukebox and gym.

EUROPEAN DESIGNS

When the current owners of an 18-room, circa-1936 brick Colonial home in Manhasset, priced at $3,999,000, moved into the manse, it was in disrepair. Over the next 15 years, the couple -- he is a now-retired construction businessman and she is an artist -- collaborated on all the details of the renovations and repairs.

The decor was inspired by Venetian and Country French design with French doors, gilding and checkerboard tiled floors. A friend was hired to create a painting on the ceiling over the second-floor landing, with a lighter take on images of Titian's "Rape of Europa," including the addition of the family's pet Maltese dogs.

The full finished basement has the original coal-burning boiler, now converted to oil, and there are servants' bells off the kitchen that at times jingle on their own, says the owners' daughter. The home, on 1.7 acres, has an in-ground pool and an attached two-car garage.

The listing agent is Prudential's Connie Liappas.
