Room makeover: Changing with family milestones in Dix Hills

Having both a pullout valet bar, above left,

Having both a pullout valet bar, above left, and a valet stand, center, are luxuries that give this "Sex and the City" styled dressing closet that over-the-top feel. Janice and Kevin Killelea of Dix Hills remodeled and enlarged the closet because their youngest is getting married. The photo is from Feb. 6, 2015. Credit: Barbara Alper

To some, Janice and Kevin Killelea's way of dealing with life changes might seem a little extreme -- they remodel their Dix Hills home. When elder daughter Courtney married, they redid the backyard. The latest remodeling was in response to the impending marriage of Kelly, their youngest child. They redid the master bedroom, bath and closet. They now have a dressing room and an impressive bathroom patterned after ones they saw and loved in Europe and Mexico.

"I wanted a 'Sex and the City' closet," says Janice, 56, a teacher, of the closet made famous by the HBO show and movie. She succeeded, as the pair of French doors from the bedroom open onto a room large enough to hold a dresser, full-length mirror, comfy chair and custom storage. "There is a place for everything."

Janice says Kevin Sr., 56, who owns an auto repair center, even keeps his side of the bedroom nice and tidy thanks to the closet. (Though she admits she isn't sharing 50-50.)

And that bathroom that has a massive shower and a bidet? Well, that is a nod to both their love of vacationing in Mexico and a trip to Europe. "I wanted a bidet because I wanted it to have a European feel," Janice explains.

What will happen when their last unmarried child, Kevin Jr., takes the plunge? Janice says she's not sure what her husband will want to do, but she's confident Kevin Sr. will respond to the empty nest by changing it.
