Five of New York’s largest mortgage lenders are offering help this week with the release of superstorm Sandy insurance settlements.
Representatives from JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, CitiMortgage and Ocwen Loan Servicing are available at the state Department of Financial Services’ Disaster Assistance Centers through Saturday. In addition, representatives from Assurant will appear on behalf of dozens of smaller lenders.
The program aims to help homeowners get lenders to endorse their insurance settlement checks, which are often written jointly to homeowners and their banks or servicers, according to a news release from the Department of Financial Services. Lenders also will offer assistance to homeowners who are struggling to make their mortgage payments. The program started Monday.
The Disaster Assistance Centers will be open at the following Long Island locations, as well as locations in Queens and Staten Island, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday:
-- Recreation Center and Ice Arena, 700 Magnolia Blvd., Long Beach
-- Cedar Creek Park, Merrick Road, East, Seaford.
-- Copiague Memorial Library, 50 Deauville Blvd., Copiague.
In addition, representatives from those five banks -- along with OneWest bank, on a limited basis -- will be available at the Department's Mobile Command Center, which will be visiting the following locations, in addition to locations in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island:
-- Lawrence, Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lawrence Village Hall, 196 Central Ave.
-- East Massapequa, Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Burns Park, 4990 Merrick Rd.
Homeowners with general insurance-related questions or those with other mortgage lenders also may attend.
Homeowners unable to go to a Disaster Assistance Center may call the Department at 800-339-1759 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. More information is available at www.dfs.ny.gov.
