Why it’s for sale: Edward, 65, who is retired from the New York Stock Exchange and Mary, 69, a retired assistant preschool teacher, say they will be downsizing.

The O’Briens bought their 3,000-square-foot home in 1983. A previously added extension off the back added a family room and a bath on the first floor and two bedrooms on the second. Ed says:

“We redid our kitchen in 2007 with granite counters, a ceramic floor, new hardwood cabinetry and a nice center island. This is a good house for entertaining. There’s lots of room inside and out. We had 120 people here for our daughter’s engagement party. . . .

"We have just under a half-acre, and most of the property is in the backyard. We have a paver patio we had done seven years ago. There’s a basketball half-court toward the back of the backyard. The neighborhood is safe. We like all our neighbors, and our kids went to the Glen Cove schools. . . . The master bedroom has two closets and a nice master bath, which was redone about two years ago.”

Mary adds:

“There’s a garden right next to the patio. The family room has two walls of windows that look out on the beautiful backyard.”
