Why it's for sale: Kathy, 59, who is retired from the Suffolk County Department of Public Works finance division, and Tom, 67, an engineer, say they want to downsize.

The LaGuardias bought their 2,875-square-foot home in 2009 when they needed to accommodate extended family. The newly constructed home was incomplete. They bought and installed the kitchen appliances and bathroom fixtures and had professional landscaping done. Kathy says:

"It's a very quiet area with only three houses on the block. Our boat is docked right in front of the house. . . . The kitchen flows nicely into the living room and is great space. It is perfect for entertaining. . . .  We totally love it here.

"The neighbors are great. The backyard is fully landscaped. I love sitting on our backyard deck. It's very private and quiet. . . . The living room has a gas fireplace, which is cozy and warm in the winter. . . . We're right next to Aquamarina Sunset Harbour, where you can rent boat slips and pool rights. . . .

"We have hardwood floors throughout the main level. We have an attached three-car garage, which I love because we do a lot of sports. So between cars and sporting equipment, it's great storage. The master suite has a large Jacuzzi tub and there's a private deck that overlooks the canal. We had absolutely no damage from superstorm Sandy. We are at 10 feet elevation and not in a flood plain."
