Why it’s for sale. The Zucconis, both 61, recently purchased a historic Victorian in Riverhead. Bill, an electrical estimator, is also a part-time antiques dealer. Theresa is a cook in a nursing home.

You can say there’s a hot story attached to this vintage-style house. It was built in 1891 in the village as a firehouse — Liberty Hose Co. No. 1. It was expanded in 1910 and later, in 1923, was moved to its current location and converted into a residence. When the Zucconis purchased it in 1974, they turned the two-family house into a single-family home. It retains an office with a separate entrance.

There are three bedrooms with high ceilings and two bathrooms — one with a pull-chain toilet and claw-foot tub, the other completely tiled with a marble floor and a therapeutic tub. The country kitchen was built to look like a cabin with beams and cherry cabinets. There are stained glass windows. Projects have included installing a new roof, updating the mechanicals and having the backyard professionally designed and landscaped. There’s also an outdoor kitchen. Central air and vacuum systems were also added.
Bill chats about other enhancements:

“We’ve been non-stop for 37 years. We like to decorate and buy furniture, so a couple of these rooms were recently renovated . . . I put in a mahogany floor in the front two rooms. The gas fireplace has an authentic mantel with a mirror. Our favorite is the four-seasons Victorian conservatory, which we put in about three years ago. It’s all glass and high-end.”
