CT school shooting sparks gun control debate

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy's husband was killed in the 1993 LIRR massacre.

WOODBURY - The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday has sparked a huge debate over gun control in the U.S.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-4th District) is a staunch believer in gun control and has fought to outlaw high-capacity automatic weapons.

McCarthy's husband was killed in the 1993 Long Island Railroad massacre.

McCarthy told the Daily News that she was outraged when the White House press secretary said Friday was not the day to talk about gun control.

"The day for that conversation was long before all those kids in Connecticut died, and before the movie theater shooting in Colorado, and before Virginia Tech, and before Columbine and before my husband was killed," McCarthy said.
