Emaciated pup found outside Mt. Vernon animal shelter

This 7-month-old pit bull/labrador retriever mix was discovered

Workers at the Mount Vernon Animal Shelter made an unusual discovery outside the building's door Wednesday morning: a wide-eyed pit bull/Labrador retriever mix stuffed in a suitcase.

Now, authorities want to know who abandoned the emaciated 7-month-old puppy, as well as an Akita/pit bull mix which was also left outside the shelter just a few hours earlier.

When the pit bull/lab mix was found, he weighed just 16 pounds, well below the typical 40 pounds for a dog his age, according to a news release from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Westchester. Too weak to walk, the puppy was rushed to the SPCA's Simpson Clinic in Westchester, where he received emergency treatment.

It's too early to determine whether he'll survive, the release said.

The Akita/pit bull mix did not require emergency care. But authorities are urging anyone with information on the animals' abandonment to call the SPCA Westchester at 914-941-7797.
