One stuntman has died and another has been injured while filming the movie “The Expendables 2” in Bulgaria, according to the Sofia News Agency.
The incident occurred late Thursday in the town of Elin Pelin, just outside the Bulgarian capital, and it involved a fake bomb explosion in a reservoir. One stuntman died on the scene, and the other was taken to the hospital where he underwent a five-hour operation. His condition following the operation was stable, according to the Associated Press.
The production company behind the movie addressed the incident in a statement released to Deadline Hollywood:
“It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident,” Nu Image and Millennium Films said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating this accident.”
The star-studded cast of the movie was not present at the time, as they were filming another scene several hours away. The cast includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone.
The original “The Expendables” was released in August 2010 and was a box-office hit, grossing more than $266 million worldwide. The sequel is set to be released in August 2012.
