There has been a lot of speculation and name-calling when it comes to the marriage of Alicia Keys to super producer Swizz Beatz (Kaseem Daoud Dean), who had been married to Mashonda until June 2010.
Keys, who has been called a homewrecker and other degrading names by the public, finally addresses the controversy in the June 2011 issue of Essence magazine.
“Everything was in order" Keys told the magazine. "We didn’t start seeing each other until after they had been separated for months.”
The singer, who says we’ve heard only one side of this three-sided story, says she “was very aware of all the false things that were being said about me.”
“And it definitely hurt. But I was sure that if I engaged, it would become a back-and-forth like some sort of sick entertainment, which goes against everything I believe in and only would have made things worse. Of course, people will believe what they want to believe. But I know the truth will shine through.”
Mashoda has been telling her side of the story on Twitter and on the VH1 reality show, “Love and Hip Hop,” where the R&B singer talks about how she was blindsided by the divorce. She and Beatz had just had their second child.
Beatz had admitted to infidelity while he was married to Mashonda, after it came out that he conceived another child with British singer Jahna Sebastian.
Keys and Beatz became engaged a month after the divorce was final between him and Mashonda. At the time, Keys was 8 months' pregnant with their son, Eygpt.
When asked about her marriage with Beatz, Keys said, “Things are really good now. Kasseem is very present in his children’s lives. I wouldn’t be able to love him otherwise. We’re doing what’s best for the children. That’s always been the most important thing. I look forward to helping them shine. They are all so phenomenal and I love them so much.”
I didn't know that seperation was equal to a legal divorce, but ok Ms. Keys.
This has been such a big deal because of Keys' numerous women empowerment anthems. The rumor that she played a part in breaking up a marriage doesn’t look good for her positive public image.
Do you believe she has cleared her name?
