Amanda Bynes is unrecognizable: Reason to worry?

Recognize this former Nickelodeon child star? At first glance, I didn't either.

Amanda Bynes, 26, took to Twitter Sunday with this close-up shot of her new -- scary -- look, complete with drag-queen eye makeup and a curly blonde 'do (which I am 99 percent sure is a wig). And those cheek piercings? First of all: unattractive. Second of all: Ouch.

In Hollywood, a messy, drastic makeover often indicates a star's life is a mess of equal proportions. When celebrities look like they have their acts together, they usually do. And when they look like trainwrecks, it's probably because they are. This is especially true for child stars. See: Lindsay Lohan circa 2007, Macaulay Culkin circa now.

Bynes seemed to begin to unravel a year ago, when she was in a string of car accidents, which included an alleged DUI and multiple hit-and-runs charges. She has pleaded not guilty in those cases. If the bizarre interview she recently gave to US Weekly is any indication of her state of mind, I think we should be concerned.

"I moved to New York City and I love it! I lost 4 lbs. since I moved. I'm 121 lbs. -- my goal is 100 lbs.," she says in an article titled, "25 Things You Don't Know About Me." The former "Amanda Show" star is 5-foot-8. Not exactly a healthy goal.

While Bynes' scary new visage is making headlines now, she debuted the new hairstyle, at least, as early as Feb. 6, judging by her Twitter photos.

What do you think? Is Amanda Bynes in serious trouble or just having fun?
