On Tuesday, Oprah Winfrey announced that the new selection of Oprah’s Book Club is “An American Marriage,” the highly anticipated novel by Tayari Jones, published by Algonquin Books.
Already sitting in Amazon’s top 1,000 based on preorders before Winfrey’s announcement, the novel went on sale Tuesday. It tells the story of an African-American couple whose lives are disrupted when the husband is sentenced to 12 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Jones says she wanted to write about the experience of being in the criminal justice system, something distant to many people. In a statement, Winfrey said, “It’s hard to get someone to understand or relate to it. But when you read a story like this, it personalizes it for you.”
“An American Marriage” is Jones’ fourth novel.
Winfrey’s production company, Harpo Films, is already signed on to produce an adaptation of “An American Marriage.” Winfrey’s interviews with Jones will appear in the March issue of “O” magazine, which comes out next week, as well as through a video message on Amazon.
