Bruce Jenner interview with Diane Sawyer to air April 24

ABC News on Monday confirmed reports that Diane Sawyer will interview Bruce Jenner, announcing an air date of April 24.

The two-hour special, "Bruce Jenner -- The Interview," will feature what the network called a "far-ranging" talk with the former Olympian, who has been the subject of long-standing reports that he is transitioning to womanhood. The interview will run as a special edition of ABC's ongoing news show "20/20."

Jenner, 65 -- who won the gold medal in the decathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and went on to become a sports commentator, motivational speaker, product endorser and infomercial entrepreneur -- has not spoken publicly about the reported transition. His mother, Esther Jenner, 88, appeared to confirm it to The Associated Press in February, saying, "I never thought I could be more proud of Bruce when he reached his goal in 1976," she said, "but I'm more proud of him now. It takes a lot of courage to do what he's doing."

According to trade reports, the cable network E! had been planning a reality-TV show built around Jenner and his transition, but Variety last month said it had confirmed the project was being suspended. While E! had not acknowledged the existence of a series, Variety said in January that the development process had progressed far enough that E!'s head of publicity was planning to meet with the gay and transgender rights group GLAAD to discuss respectful handling of the transition.
