Pop star Ariana Grande and her boyfriend of several months, rapper Big Sean, have broken up.

Representatives for the two confirmed in a joint statement Monday that, "They both care deeply for each other and remain close friends. We kindly ask that the media respect their wish for privacy regarding this personal matter at this time."

Grande, 21, and Big Sean, 27, were first rumored to be a couple in August, after he had contributed to her album "My Everything" -- guest-starring as featured singer on the single "Best Mistake" and whispering part of the chorus on the song "Problem." The two reportedly attended a screening of the film "The Purge: Anarchy" in early August. Live cameras recorded the two performers holding hands in a backstage area during the MTV Video Music Awards later that month.

Big Sean -- who confirmed in April that he had called off his engagement to "Glee" star Naya Rivera -- told Ryan Seacrest in a September radio interview, "Ariana is very, very special. She's very special to me. Everything she has going on is good with her, everything I have going on is good with me, everything between me and her is good. . . . "

The following month Grande directly confirmed in an interview that she and Big Sean, who was born Sean Michael Leonard Anderson, were dating. Grande told the Saturday magazine of the UK newspaper The Telegraph, "He is one of the most amazing men in the whole world, and that includes my grandfather and my brother. I think the world of him, and he's an amazing person."

Grande previously had dated Nathan Sykes of the boy band The Wanted for a few months in 2013 after the two recorded the duet "Almost Is Never Enough" for the film "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones." They reportedly broke up in December of that year. Before and after Sykes, Grande had dated Australian comedy group member Jai Brooks on and off since 2012. Grande and Brooks reportedly split up the last time in July of last year.
