True love dies. Just get used to it.
Here are the celebrity splits that left us feeling sad, lost, confused or just empty.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Let's call this one what it is: The most surprising star split of 2016 (and maybe this century). Shortly after news broke on Tuesday, Sept. 20 that Jolie filed for divorce a day earlier, Pitt released a statement to People, saying, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

They met on the set of the movie in 2005, Williams got pregnant and they moved into a Boerum Hill townhouse. Their daughter was born in 2006, just before the film was released. They split later that year, and, in 2008, Ledger died in New York City.
Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio
America's sweetheart and a baseball legend? That's what made this couple so special to so many, but the romance fizzled quickly. Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio wed in 1954, but the marriage lasted just nine months.

Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
