Sailor Brinkley Cook, youngest child of Sag Harbor supermodel Christie Brinkley, has become the first second-generation model to pose solo for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
Publisher Time Inc. announced Wednesday that Cook, 19, an IMG model as well as a photography major and psychology minor at Parsons School of Design, will be following in the footsteps of her mother, 63. Christie Brinkley appeared in the iconic annual magazine eight times from 1975 to 2004, with a record three consecutive covers from 1979 to 1981. Cook, Brinkley’s daughter with her ex, fourth husband Peter Cook, had posed in the 2017 issue, alongside Brinkley and singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel, 31, Brinkley’s daughter with second husband Billy Joel.
“EXCITING NEWS!!! Congratulations Sailor! Raise Your Sails and Go For It!” tweeted proud mom Brinkley on Wednesday morning.
The issue’s editor, MJ Day, said in a statement that, “Obviously we loved Sailor from the get go . . . Meeting and shooting her last year was one of the highlights of my career. She’s the millennial girl next door. She’s funny. She’s driven. She’s smart. She’s beautiful. She’s interesting. And most of all, she has a voice and isn’t afraid to use it.”
Earlier this month, Cook’s short film “Identity and Freedom — Episode: 3,” about identity and self-perception, was among the works shown by young filmmakers at the arts festival Sag Harbor and the World: Strength in Diversity, at the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum.
Day added that Cook “translates so well off the printed page — she takes beautiful pictures but that’s only one of the countless things she’s good at. Much like her mom, she embodies everything it means to be an SI Swimsuit model, but she’s doing it in a way that is very much her own.”
Cook joins previously announced 2018 Rookies Chase Carter, Anne de Paula, and Robin Holzken. Her upcoming photo shoot in Aruba will be livestreamed, the publisher said.
