Supermodel Gisele Bündchen said on Tuesday that her quarterback husband Tom Brady's brief suspension over illegally deflated footballs during a January playoff win had challenged their marriage.

"My father always says the quality of your life depends on the quality of your relationships," Bündchen, 35, told "CBS This Morning" co-host Charlie Rose, referring to the "DeflateGate" controversy in which a league report said Brady was "at least generally aware" the New England Patriots had deflated footballs to give him an unfair advantage. "And I think no matter how challenging it was," she continued, "we were always being supportive of one another. And you know, that's the most important thing you can have in your life . . . a support system and love."

In September Brady, 38, had downplayed reports of marital discord, telling a Boston radio station, "We're in a great place . . . I've been very blessed with support from my family and certainly her, and there's no bigger supporter that I have than her and vice versa. I've been very blessed to have an incredible relationship with my life partner, and I don't think anything will ever get in the way of that."

Bündchen told Rose that even before the controversy, the two had experienced a "few tough times together," including when Brady's ex-girlfriend, actress Bridget Moynahan, announced in February 2007 that she was pregnant with Brady's child. Brady and Bündchen were first seen together publicly in January 2007 after reportedly beginning to date just before Christmas, and Jack Moynahan was born that Aug. 22.

"I didn't know what to do. It was kind of one of those moments of like, 'Do I just run away?' " Bündchen said. "I think it was very challenging for everyone involved. I think, you know, eight years later, we have a great relationship . . . it all worked out in the end but it was a tough time."

Bündchen and Brady, who married in February 2009, have two children, Benjamin and Vivian, who turn 6 and 3, respectively, next month.
