Singer-actress Jamie Lynn Spears, younger sister of pop star Britney Spears, was involved in a melee over the weekend in a Louisiana sandwich shop.

TMZ.com said Spears, 23, was with a friend at the Pita Pit in Hammond, the town where she lives with her family, when the friend was hit with a bottle. The site said Spears dragged her friend to safety behind a counter, then found a long, serrated bread knife she began brandishing until the fight ended.

Police were called, the site added, but the friend declined to press charges and no arrest was made.

Pita Pit franchise owner Jack Brighenti told Newsday, "I have been with Pita Pit for several years, and have never seen anything like this. The events occurred after 2 a.m. this past Saturday night -- technically Sunday morning -- just before we closed. A group of males got into an altercation and for some reason Jamie Lynn Spears ran behind the counter and picked up a bread knife. Our management called the police immediately and thankfully nothing else happened."

The restaurant's Facebook page linked to the TMZ story, with the comment, "Madness."

The Hammond Police Department did not respond to a Newsday request for comment.
