Katy Perry nets 9 VMA nods

Katy Perry dominated this year's MTV Video Music Award nominations, garnering a leading nine, including the prestigious video of the year for "Firework."

The pop star, who hosted the network's Wednesday late-night special announcing the nominations, is also up for best female video for the song. Perry's other nods include best pop video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," and best special effects for "E.T.," which features Kanye West.

West and British sensation Adele tied for the second most nominations with seven apiece. Included in West's Moonman nods are best male video and best hip-hop video (both for "All of the Lights," featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi).

The chart-topping Adele will compete with Perry for the top video with "Rolling in the Deep." Others in the video of the year category include the Beastie Boys for "Make Some Noise"; Tyler, The Creator for "Yonkers"; and Bruno Mars for "Grenade."

Mars was nominated for four trophies. Other multiple nominees include Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Eminem.

As for Perry, we'll see how this year's awards go. Last year, "California Gurls" got beat out for best female video and best pop video by Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance."
