"Scandal" producers were smart about keeping Kerry Washington's pregnancy well-hidden on camera this season, and the actress did an equally good job of keeping her delivery two weeks ago a secret. Washington, 37, gave birth to a baby girl, Isabelle Amarachi Asomugha, on April 21 at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, TMZ reported Friday.
This is the first child for the "Scandal" star and her husband, former NFL cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, 32, who were married in June. Us Weekly broke the news in October that the couple was expecting, but Washington did not open up about her pregnancy until her appearance at the Golden Globes on Jan. 12. While being interviewed by Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet, Washington, who was wearing a white Balenciaga gown, pointed to her baby bump and said, "I also feel like I have the best date of the night, my little accessory here."
On Feb. 23, "Scandal" creator Shonda Rhimes hosted a baby shower for Washington at Rhimes' home in Los Angeles. Among the 60 guests were actresses Regina King and Jane Fonda.
Washington completed her work on season 3 of "Scandal" throughout her pregnancy. Because her character, Olivia Pope, is not pregnant, Washington concealed her growing belly with large purses, oversize coats and other diversions.
The episode order for this season's shows was cut from 22 to 18, seemingly to accommodate Washington's pregnancy. Once production wrapped, she kept out of the limelight as she prepared for the arrival of her child.
