The 2012 MTV Movie Awards, held Sunday night at the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, Calif., had its share of memorable moments.
The most poignant involved Christian Bale, star of the upcoming "The Dark Knight Returns." He became overwhelmed with emotion after seeing the late Heath Ledger as The Joker in "The Dark Knight," part of a montage from Bale's Batman films.
"Man, great to remember Heath in that moment," Bale told the audience as he stood onstage with fellow "Dark Knight Returns" stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gary Oldman. "Wonderful to see Heath Ledger there," he said. Becoming teary-eyed, Bale found his voice quavering as he then introduced director Christopher Nolan.
More comically poignant was host Russell Brand's allusion to his ex-wife, singer Katy Perry. "The last time I did an MTV awards show, I did end up marrying someone that was there," he riffed. "So tonight I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for my next wife!"
Finally, "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart made out with herself after she and co-star Robert Pattinson won their fourth consecutive best kiss award. With Pattinson absent due to commitments for his upcoming film "Cosmopolis," Stewart asked for volunteers for an acceptance kiss. When her "Snow White and the Huntsman" co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron and "Twilight" co-star Taylor Lautner declined, she jokingly told the audience, "I actually do, like, pretty well by myself, I think," then turned her back and mimicked a steamy couple.
