Despite rumors linking her to fellow Oscar-winner Jared Leto, "12 Years a Slave" star Lupita Nyong'o reportedly is dating the Somali-Canadian rapper K'Naan.
The two were photographed together outside the Manhattan studio of "Live! with Kelly & Michael" on March 3, the day after she won the Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role as Patsey in the historical drama. She and K'Naan appeared to be affectionate in the photos, which later were posted online, as they hold one another, with K'Naan carrying her Oscar.
Us Weekly said Wednesday that the two, both based in New York, have been seeing each other since September, having bonded over such mutual interests as African humanitarian issues.
Nyong'o, 31, was born in Mexico City to Kenyan parents, but grew up in suburban Nairobi and attended college in the United States. K'Naan, 36, born Keinan Abdi Warsame, was born in Somalia but emigrated with his family to Toronto as a toddler.
K'Naan has two sons with his ex-wife, pharmacy technician Deqa Warsame, Us said, noting that Nyong'o has not met his children.
A spokeswoman for K'Naan did not respond to a Newsday request for comment. A representative for Nyong'o could not be reached.
Speculation arose regarding the actress and "Dallas Buyers Club" star Leto after he included her, calling her "my future ex-wife" during a plethora of thank yous -- including hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, Justin Bieber and Baby Jesus -- during an acceptance speech at the Independent Spirit Awards on March 1. "And also my future ex-wife -- I'm talking to you Lupita Nyong'o!" he said.
