Actor-comedian Patton Oswalt, who demonstrated inspiring steadfastness as a single father after the death of his wife last year, has become engaged to actress Meredith Salenger.
“Yes, Patton is engaged to Meredith,” Oswalt’s spokesman, Kevin McLaughlin, told Newsday on Thursday.
“I put the ring in a marzipan Slave I replica,” Oswalt, 48, tweeted afterward, referring to the spaceship of “Star Wars” bounty hunters Jango Fett and Boba Fett, “and said, ‘Will you be my Padawan of Love?’,” another “Star Wars” reference. “She maced me but said yes later,” he added jokingly.
Salenger, 47, retweeted the missive and wrote, “I’m marrying THIS nerd. #dontbejealous.” Less tongue-in-cheek, she wrote separately, “It’s official. I’m the luckiest happiest girl in the universe!!!! I love you @pattonoswalt I love you Alice Oswalt!,” Oswalt’s 8-year-old daughter with his late wife Michelle McNamara.
The couple fielded congratulations from numerous well-wishers including “Star Wars” star Mark Hamill; Clark Gregg of ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” on which Oswalt plays a recurring role; Felicia Day, his co-star on “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return”; actresses Busy Philipps and Melissa Fumero; NPR host Peter Sagal; comedian and TV personality Chris Hardwick; comic-book writer Warren Ellis and many others.
Salenger earlier Thursday had playfully posted an Instagram image captioned, “I don’t wanna brag... but check out the size of The Rock on my finger! Hahahah (photoshop via @edwardderuiter),” with a photo of herself and Oswalt cuddling and an image of wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson standing on her hand. Johnson himself later tweeted jocularly, “Haha that’s a big Rock. Tell … @pattonoswalt he still owes me…. Happy 4 you guys.”
Oswalt and Salenger where first seen together publicly as a couple at the Los Angeles premiere of the action movie “Baby Driver” on June 14.
Oswalt’s wife McNamara died suddenly in her sleep on April 21, 2016, at age 46. Oswalt told The Associated Press in February, after learning the coroner’s test results, that McNamara passed away through a combination of the medications Adderall, Xanax and fentanyl and undiagnosed blockages in her arteries.
