Oscar winners Charlize Theron and Sean Penn reportedly are engaged.

Us Weekly said Wednesday that Penn, 54, proposed to Theron, 39, during a trip to Paris in November. The longtime friends were first linked as a couple after they were seen vacationing together in Hawaii at the end of last year.

The magazine made the claim based on an anonymous source, though Theron has not been seen wearing an engagement ring in public.

In January 2010, Theron -- who won her Academy Award for playing real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster" (2003) -- broke up with her partner of nearly a decade, Irish actor Stuart Townsend. She announced in March 2012 she had adopted an infant boy, Jackson.

"I really do understand the importance and what that ceremony represents to so many people, but it's just such a personal thing. Let's put it this way: I never had the dream of the white dress," Theron told Vogue in May. "And watching other people getting married? I think it's beautiful for them, but to be quite honest, usually I'm sitting there just devastated," she said, adding with a laugh, "It's supposed to be this night of celebrating love, and all you see is a couple separated all night making sure everybody else is OK. It just looks like a lot of work. And as you get older, you start sifting through the stuff that really matters."

Penn, who won Oscars for "Mystic River" (2003) and "Milk" (2008), was married to singer Madonna from 1985 to 1989 and to actress Robin Wright, with whom he has two children, from 1996 to 2010.

Penn's representative declined to comment, saying the story was "all speculation." Theron's representative did not respond to a Newsday request for comment.
