Sean Penn: Wife Robin 'a ghost to me'

Two-time Oscar-winner Sean Penn says his estranged wife, Robin Wright Penn, is simply "a ghost to me now." Speaking to author Douglas Brinkley in July's issue of Vanity Fair, Penn, 49, says of the "Princess Bride" actress, "We spent all those years together . . . Now she's just gone."

Wright Penn, 44, filed for divorce in August. The roller-coaster couple, together since 1989 and married since 1996, had come close to splitting twice before. They reconciled both times, though Wright Penn said about her marriage last year, "I know what I don't want . . . I have no regrets."

Penn, who has spent the past several months living in a tent in Haiti to help the earthquake-ravaged country, mused, "I was for 20 years in a relationship with Robin and 18 years with children. I didn't have time to commit to anything - for real - in places like Iraq, except to denounce the war. But now I'm single. I can lend a hand."
