Staten Island's James Molinaro calls Lady Gaga a slut

Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro called Lady Gaga "a slut" Monday for being photographed smoking marijuana and "glorifying" drug use.

Speaking at a Borough Hall launch of a program to combat youth drug abuse, Molinaro pointed at poster-board photos of Gaga smoking a joint onstage in Amsterdam last week and said, "Stop glorifying the drug use," the Staten Island Advance reported Tuesday. "There's Gaga. Here's this . . . this . . . I would call her a slut. This slut is influencing many, many children . . . and it's right to do. It's fine, it's part of it," he added sarcastically. "My niece has two daughters, 12 and 14, [and] they love this woman. Why? Why?"

Molinaro also spoke of the 2006 drug-overdose death of his adult son Stephen. Molinaro's press office did not return Newsday's call asking for clarification or expansion, including on the word slut, which Merriam-Webster primarily defines as a promiscuous woman. Gaga's spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.

The images of Gaga came from a YouTube video of one of two concerts on her Born This Way Ball tour at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on Sept. 17 and 18.

Later in the day, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer -- a friend of Gaga's family -- came to the singer's defense. "Lady Gaga's work is a symbol of individuality and artistic expression. In addition to her artistic pursuits, she is a social justice activist and a real leader for marriage equality in this country," he told the New York Observer.
