Tyler showed up onstage at the kickoff of the Joe Perry Project tour Tuesday night at the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza to say, "New York, I want you to know I'm not leaving Aerosmith," before kicking into the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers' classic "Walk This Way" with Perry.
"I was totally surprised. I had no idea he was going to show up," Perry told People magazine in his first interview since the show. In fact, the pair hadn't spoken in weeks. "All I know is we walked off stage and were sitting taking our break [before] the encore and there was a bunch of commotion and I looked up and Steven was there."
It's quite an abrupt turnaround seeing as on Monday, Perry was on his Twitter account saying, "Aerosmith is positively looking for a new singer to work with. You just can't take 40 years of experience and throw it in the bin!"
He also told the Las Vegas Sun that he thought Tyler had left the band, though he couldn't confirm it because Tyler wouldn't return his calls.
After he performed the song, Tyler left without seeing or speaking to Perry again. "He appeared so fast and was gone so fast," the guitarist told People, noting that physically, Tyler "seemed fine. He stood up there and sang," referring to the fact that Tyler has apparently recovered from his tumble from the stage in South Dakota in August, after being hospitalized for neck and shoulder injuries.
As for the future of Aerosmith, Perry says "Nothing has really changed between two days ago and today." He added he still believes that Tyler's intention to take two years off from the band still stands.
But speaking for himself and bandmates Joey Kramer, Brad Whitford, and Tom Hamilton, he adds, "We're still Aerosmith. We don't know what we're gonna do. We've talked about all kinds of different things. Things are still up in the air." Perhaps Tyler, who started the whole escapade by telling Classic Rock magazine that he was going to start a solo project, needs to start returning his bandmates' phone calls - at least the ones that start with, "Hi, are you still in the band?"
Aerosmith management has still not commented on the whole episode.
