Riverhead tulip festival canceled

The tulips have all been plucked at Garden of Eve in Riverhead, forcing the organizers to cancel the remainder of what was to be a five-week festival at the farm. The biggest draw: a massive field brimming with 30,000 plants for u-picking and photo opps.

Organizers with Ecotulips, the company overseeing the event, said Tuesday factors such as the harsh winter weather made the tulip growing not as robust as was hoped. The popularity of the tulip field may be a victim of its own success, as well.

"Mother's Day weekend was extremely popular for tulip picking," Ecotulip owners Keriann and Jeroen Koeman said in an email announcing the cancellation. "The tulips we did have were beautiful and were happily picked."
