On the market? Thursday nights have somehow emerged as the unofficial night for singles ages 30 and up to mingle in the bar and cocktail lounges at some of Long Island's classier restaurants. Here's a look at scenes we found on some recent Thursday evenings between 7 and 9 p.m.
Where: 650 Jericho Tpke., Syosset, 516-496-8000, sagamoresteakhouse.com
Who goes: Mostly 30- to 40-something singles and the after-work corporate crowd
Chat factor: High. Patrons tend to arrive in groups, but are quite sociable with others.
The scene: The action starts in the parking lot, as valets commandeering luxury cars jockey with limousines ferrying other patrons in and out. Inside, the cocktail menu sets the tone, with options like the "Million Dollar Margarita" and "The Single at Sagamore." The latter is exactly what seems to be happening at the bar here. "It's hard to say hi when she's sitting with a bunch of friends," says Ira Bloom, 37, of Port Washington. His strategy? "I wait until one I like breaks away," and then he makes his approach.
Where: 1080 Corporate Dr., Westbury, 516-693-5400, citycellarny.com
Who goes: The after-work corporate crowd (20-somethings to those in their early 40s); singles and couples
Chat factor: Medium. Established couples share the bar with both casual and dressy patrons.
The scene: There's no shortage of patrons dining in the main restaurant - but the bar also stars as a good place to meet someone new. While there are plenty of couples and groups of friends on the scene, a number of well-dressed men and women stop in for a cocktail or a glass of wine ($8-$16) and wind up flirting. "There's a real cute factor in here," says Lauren Sellers, 32, of Carle Place.
Where: 7940 Jericho Tpke., Woodbury, 516-922-2400
Who goes: Singles and couples, mostly ages 25 to 45
Chat factor: Medium. Friends and other small groups throw back drinks and exchange curious glances.
The scene: Unlike many other spots at this hour, here you'll find a strong crop of locals - some not necessarily coming in on their way home from work, but instead, from a regal day at the spa or shopping. On a recent Thursday evening, plenty of offers to buy drinks were being bandied around. But guys, take note: "Please, no more business cards!" says Robin Hershman, 35, of Woodbury.
Where: 363 New York Ave., Huntington, 631-421-6900, honukitchen.com
Who goes: Preppy singles ages 30 to 45
Chat factor: Medium to high. Patrons tend to congregate in groups but wind up circulating through the bar area.
The scene: Patrons crowd into this gorgeous space and sip cocktails like the "Don & Ginger" while waiting to approach - or be approached. The flirting is often bold and overt, so it's not a scene for the shy.
Where: 25 E. Broadway, Port Jefferson, 800-332-6367, danfords.com
Who goes: 30-somethings to 50-somethings
Chat factor: Medium to low. Most people here have either arrived together or are just sharing platonic, friendly conversation.
The scene: This chic waterside lounge should be more of a meeting place for the dating crowd, but its patrons tend to be either out-of-towners from the attached hotel, or small groups with little intention to mingle.
Where: 95 School St., Bridgehampton, 631-613-6469, copawineandtapas.com
Who goes: Crowd's age spans from mid-20s to 50s.
Chat factor: Medium to high.
The scene: Once the summering city-dwellers retreat west for winter, this tapas spot morphs into a preppy bar scene. The mood is romantic, set with a European country-style room and live lounge music after 8 p.m. on Thursdays. On a recent night, patrons (more lass than lad) quickly dove into conversation, including Mary Kline, 34, of Southampton who chatted amicably with Mark Weller, 28, of Moriches, and treated him to a beverage. Says Kline, "There's nothing wrong with buying a guy a drink."
