“Dancing With the Stars” champions Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd became engaged Saturday night in Miami.
Chmerkovskiy, a professional ballroom dancer who appeared in 14 seasons of “DWTS” before retiring from the show, and Murgatroyd, a pro who competed in eight until ankle surgery sidelined her during the recent 21st, were starring in “Sway: A Dance Trilogy” at the Olympia Theater in downtown Miami when he fell to one knee and proposed. “I’m in love with you and I want to be in love with you for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?” he asked, according to The Miami Herald-owned Miami.com, which quoted an eyewitness. When Murgatroyd said yes, the audience and cast cheered, the site reported.
“She said ‘yes,’ ” the Ukraine-born Chmerkovskiy, 35, wrote on social media, posting an Instagram image of an elated Murgatroyd standing before him, her hands together in front of her, as he holds a ring in one hand and a microphone in the other, while their fellow dancers applaud.
“I said yes!!!!!!,” Murgatroyd, 29, wrote on Instagram six hours later, captioning a photo of the two of them at a crowded bar, kissing. “You have my heart forever my love. Love always wins.”
Chmerkovskiy’s brother and “Sway” co-star, Val Chmerkovskiy, 29, another “DWTS” champion, posted Maksim’s proposal image on his own Instagram page, writing, “I love the two of you with all my heart. you have my brothers loyalty, heart. his one and only for the rest of his life. you’re family now and that makes you my sister, the second most important woman in my life. what’s mine is yours. Forever and always.”
Another “DWTS” professional dancer, Sharna Burgess, posted an image of the moment after Murgatroyd accepted, with the bride-to-be kissing her future husband. “So this just happened!!!!” Burgess, 30, wrote, “Ahhhhh I’m so excited for my loves!! Maksim and Peta, it’s about bloody time!!!! Congratulations you two!!! #iwishiwasthere #madeforeachother.”
Maksim Chmerkovskiy previously was engaged to another castmate, Season 13 champion Karina Smirnoff, to whom he proposed on New Year’s Eve 2008. The couple announced their breakup the following September. He and the New Zealand-born, Australia-raised Murgatroyd have dated on and off since 2012.
