Dinosaurs have rumbled past superheroes, as "Jurassic World" overtook "Marvel's The Avengers" (2012) for third place on the list of worldwide movie grosses.
Universal Pictures said Thursday that its science-fiction action-adventure film's earnings had reached $1.52 billion on Tuesday, its 40th day of release, to surpass the Marvel Comics super-team movie's $1.519 billion, achieved in 133 days.
James Cameron's 2009 "Avatar" ($2.79 billion) and 1997 "Titanic" ($2.19 billion) remain at No. 1 and No. 2. Figures are not adjusted for inflation.
Not surprisingly, the studio also announced it had greenlit a "Jurassic World" sequel for release on June 22, 2018. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will return as leads.
