THE DEAL Pablo Larrain’s drama about Jacqueline Kennedy, starring the Jericho-raised Portman in the title role, is now a last-minute entry in this year’s Oscar race, according to Deadline. “Jackie,” which covers the first lady’s days after her husband’s assassination, was introduced as a work in progress in May at the Cannes Film Festival, played its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month and is currently on screens at the Toronto International Film Festival. Fox Searchlight closed a deal for U.S. distribution rights and quickly set a release date of Dec. 9.

THE DEAL Del Toro and Josh Brolin, the stars of Denis Villeneuve’s moody 2015 crime drama “Sicario,” are set to appear in a follow-up titled “Soldado,” Variety reports. The two would reprise their roles as a vengeful hit man and a cocky CIA agent, respectively, in what new director Stefano Sollima calls “a stand-alone story.” The screenwriter is Taylor Sheridan, who also wrote “Sicario.” Production is scheduled to start in the coming weeks.
THE MOVIE “Is That a Gun in Your Pocket?”
THE DEAL Two Long Island brothers will see the release of their new feature film in theaters this weekend. It’s a comedy about a small Texas town whose women hold a sex strike until their men give up their guns. The siblings — writer-director Matt Cooper, who produced the film with David Cooper — were raised in Searingtown and Old Westbury, where they attended Wheatley High School. The cast includes Cloris Leachman, John Heard, John Michael Higgins and Andrea Anders. The film opens Friday at Manhattan’s Cinema Village.
