WHO Johnny Depp
THE MOVIE "The Lone Ranger"
THE DEAL No, he won't be playing the masked man. Instead, the eccentric actor has been cast as the American Indian sidekick Tonto, according to Deadline.com. The Disney project has been kicking around for some time, but director Gore Verbinski ("The Pirates of the Caribbean") recently committed to the movie. Depp also can be heard, if not seen, playing a popeyed lizard in Verbinski's animated feature "Rango," due out next year.
THE MOVIE "Brutal Beauty: Tales of the Rose City Rollers"
THE DEAL Like a real-life "Whip It," this documentary follows a year and a half in the life of a Portland, Ore., women's roller derby team. Next week's screening will be attended by members of the Long Island Roller Rebels, though exactly which ones (perhaps Carnage Electra or Tripsy Rose Lee?) have not yet been announced.
INFO Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Ave., Huntington. Tickets are $13. 800-838-3006; cinemaartscentre.org.
THE MOVIE "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"
THE DEAL With the sun about to set on the "Twilight" saga, Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment recently announced a coming relaunch of the beloved "Buffy" franchise, which began as a 1992 film and later spawned a television series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as a bubbly but brutal teenager. Creator Joss Whedon apparently will not be involved. "While this is not your high school Buffy," Charles Roven of Atlas Entertainment said in a statement, "she'll be just as witty, tough and sexy as we all remember her to be."
