Felicity Jones plays Jyn Erso in the first trailer for “Rogue One,” which premiered on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Thursday and is now available online.

“Rogue One” is being billed as “A Star Wars Story,” a stand-alone spinoff from the core franchise.

Jones, a 32-year-old British actor whose girlish face often allows her to play much younger (“The Theory of Everything,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”), stars as a troublemaker whose crimes against the Empire include “forgery of Imperial documents, possession of stolen property, aggravated assault, resisting arrest.” That makes her the ideal Rebel soldier to take on a dangerous mission.

The trailer suggests that “Rogue One” will be populated with familiar “Star Wars” icons, from Stormtroopers to AT-AT Walkers to what looks like the first Death Star. In an initial teaser trailer for the real trailer — proof of how much interest surrounds this project — the first sound heard is the roar of a TIE Fighter.

“Rogue One” is directed by Gareth Edwards (2014’s “Godzilla”) and also stars Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn and Donnie Yen. It’s scheduled for release Dec. 16.
