Susan Sarandon to play a pong-playing guru in 'Ping Pong Summer'

THE MOVIE "Ping Pong Summer"

THE DEAL Gravitas Ventures recently acquired this teen comedy set in the 1980s, according to TheWrap.com. The story centers on a 13-year-old boy named Rad Miracle (Marcello Conte), who looks to ping-pong guru Randi Jammer (Sarandon) to help improve his game. The film also stars Amy Sedaris, Judah Friedlander and Lea Thompson. Not coincidentally, Sarandon is a co-owner of SPiN, a chain of ping-pong clubs with branches in Los Angeles, Toronto, Milwaukee and Manhattan.

 

THE MOVIE "Bob Marley: The Making of a Legend"

THE DEAL This documentary on the reggae icon will screen tonight -- Marley's birthday -- and also will launch a five-film series devoted to Black History Month. Admission to the Marley film includes a reception with live music by hip-hop founder DJ Kool Herc, plus a live interview via Skype with directors Esther Anderson and Gian Godoy. All other films in the series, which runs through Feb. 26, also will feature guest speakers.

THE MOVIE "Men With No Fear"

THE DEAL The actor is in talks to star in this heist movie about a man trying to rob a ruthless drug kingpin, Variety reports. The film is being directed by Spain's Paco Cabezas, who recently wrapped another crime thriller, "Tokarev," with Cage. In recent years, the actor has devoted himself almost entirely to genre fare such as thrillers, adventures, action films and science fiction; his upcoming projects include the post-Rapture epic "Left Behind," scheduled for release in June.
