“The Secret Lives of Pets,” which set a box-office record for a non-sequel film, will tempt fate with a follow-up.

A sequel to the animated hit from Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures is scheduled for release July 13, 2018, according to Variety.

The story of a terrier named Max (voiced by Louis C.K.) who makes friends with a shaggy mutt named Duke (Eric Stonestreet), “The Secret Life of Pets” arrived in theaters July 8 and became an instant smash. The film racked up $103.2 million at the box office, the highest opening-weekend gross for any original film, animated or otherwise.

That was surely cause for celebration at the animation studio Illumination Entertainment, which has already scored big with two “Despicable Me” movies and a spinoff, “Minions.” Positive reviews may have helped the movie as well. More than a few critics noted that Illumination seemed to take a page from Pixar’s playbook by focusing on characters and emotions in addition to wacky animal antics.

“The Secret Life of Pets” has already passed the $400 million mark at the worldwide box office and is just beginning its expansion into 48 more territories, including the increasingly crucial China market.
