Alexa Ray Joel is following in the footsteps of both her famous parents with her latest project.
Monday, she unveiled both her new ad campaign as a model for Gap, like mom Christie Brinkley, and the campaign’s theme – her version of father Billy Joel’s classic “Just the Way You Are.”
In the spot, directed by Danny Clinch, Alexa Ray plays the same kind of piano her dad used when he recorded the Grammy-winning original, as well as wearing one of his rings. Her version is slower and simpler than her father’s, using poppier phrasing and more vocal flourishes than he ever would.
The commercial debuted on TV Monday during prime time. Alexa Ray is set to perform the song, which is already on sale on iTunes, on Katie Couric’s talk show on Wednesday.
Also part of the Gap “Back to Blue” campaign is George Harrison’s son, Dhani, who performs his father’s song “For You Blue” in his spot.
“The entire ‘Back to Blue’ campaign embodies what it means to be comfortable in your own skin,” Seth Farbman, Gap’s global chief marketing officer, said in a statement. “As a brand that is known for expressing itself through sight, sound and motion, we wanted to bring this idea to life through the voices of two individuals who are recognized for staying true to who they want to be. To me, honest, open and heartfelt films like these are the future of video content. Anyone can relate to them because they're real.”
