While the “American Idol” guys are all still kind of working out their nerves or their issues with actually singing songs people might, you know, enjoy, the gals have gotten down to business.
Crystal Bowersox, recovering from a serious health scare according to Simon Cowell, continues to show that she knows exactly what she’s doing, delivering a gorgeous, gospelly version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “As Long as I Can See the Light.” Lilly Scott was nearly as memorable for her Duffy-ish take on “A Change Is Gonna Come.” And     Siobhan Magnus announced herself as a contender with her soaring note near the end of “Think.” Though she has yet to deliver a strong performance from start to finish, Siobhan may be the one to watch.
There was frustration for early favorite Katie Stevens, who responded to calls for doing a more youth-oriented song by taking on Corinne Bailey Rae’s throwback soul smash “Put Your Records On.” Um, no.
She made me think about how contestants prepare for the show. Do they have a string of songs that they’ve prepared for the early weeks – before the theme shows start – and just roll them out, or do they just wing it from week to week? Bowersox and Scott clearly came prepared, but what about the rest? Paige Miles sang Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away” like she just learned it yesterday. And Haeley Vaughn – sweet, happy Haeley Vaughn – sang “The Climb” like she had no idea what the words meant. Kara DioGuardi, in a rare moment of succinct clarity, actually hit Haeley’s problem on the head. The talented teen needs a year of practice and training to keep up with the top tier. Will she be able to get there before she gets voted off? We’ll see.
