Crystal Bowersox is so far ahead of the rest of the field – both guys and gals – that I wonder if anyone will ever catch her.
Her take on Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason” was sleek and soulful and, most importantly, self-possessed. Unlike nearly everyone else this season, Bowersox looks like she knows exactly what she’s doing, coming on like a young Bonnie Raitt fueled by Melissa Etheridge attitude.
“You are the one to beat,” Simon Cowell told her. Indeed, she is.
Lilly Scott and Siobhan Magnus battled to stay in the race, as Lilly brought some quirkiness to Patsy Cline’s “I Fall to Pieces” and Siobhan brought some power (and an odd sense of gloom) to “House of the Rising Sun.”
Previously the bottom of the barrel, Didi Benami surprised with a light-hearted take on Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon,” while the struggling Lacey Brown got it together enough to tackle Brandi Carlisle’s “The Story,” though whether that will be enough to save her remains to be seen.
On the other side, Katie Stevens continued to fade, seemingly flummoxed by what the judges want from her, as she wrestled with Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway.” Katelyn Epperly turned in a bland "I Feel the Earth Move" and poor Paige Miles wobbled her way through an ill-advised jazzy-loungey version of “Smile,” virtually guaranteeing herself a quick exit.
