Aretha Franklin didn't just give fans at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater an amazing show last night, she also provided some surprises.
“I hope you heard the songs that you wanted to hear,” she said, before delivering a rousing version of “Respect” as an encore. “If not, you can come see me August 4 at Coney Island. It will be a completely different program.”
Yes, The Queen of Soul is the “Surprise Guest” that the Seaside Summer Concert Series has been promoting for that day. And that show, like the rest of the series, will be free.
Another surprise was actually a story that sort of freaked people out because of its setup. “Did you hear about Muhammad Ali?” she asked, after returning from a short intermission.
A hush fell over the crowd and many started reaching for their smartphones to start looking for news on the boxing legend.
Miss Franklin begins telling the story of how Ali was on a flight and a flight attendant asked him to buckle his seat belt.
“He told her, 'Superman don't need no seat belt,'” she said, giving her Ali impression. “She told him, 'Superman didn't need no plane neither. Buckle that seat belt!'”
