On One Direction’s current tour, it became clear that they were more of a rock band that didn’t play instruments than a group in the traditional boy band mold. “Best Song Ever” (Columbia), from the soundtrack of their upcoming documentary “This Is Us,” moves further down that road. Filled with more guitars and a recurring yelp that may be another nod to The Clash, “Best Song Ever” is undeniably catchy, while still markedly more grown-up sounding than anything they’ve done so far. It seems One Direction know where they’re heading.
The video, which has drawn nearly 10 million views in a day, shows 1D also know that humor may be an even stronger draw for them than their scream-inducing good looks. Dressed in a variety of costumes that mock the usual music industry marketing meeting, the video and its surprises have been just as newsworthy as the song.
