So there was plenty of news in “Voice” land tonight. First off, Massapequa’s Justin Johnes was eliminated from Team Blake by Tanner Linford. To make matters worse, he was cut in a montage so we have no idea what he sang or how he did. We just know he’s gone, which is sad.
Secondly, “The Voice” announced the coaching staff for Season 8, which will see Adam Levine and Blake Shelton continuing as usual (are they ever going to take a break?), along with Pharrell, and the returning Christina Aguilera.
Here’s how the rest of the night shook out:
TEAM PHARRELL: JORDY SEARCY VS. TAYLOR PHELAN, “Breakeven”
Jordy has a better voice, but Taylor had a better connection to The Script song, tightening the battle between the guitar-wielding singers. “That was class,” Gwen Stefani said. Pharrell said people connect better to Taylor’s ambition and that’s why he chose him.
PHARRELL PICK: Taylor
SHOULD’VE PICKED: Taylor

TEAM GWEN: ALESSANDRA CASTRONOVO VS. JOE KIRK, “Stay”
This was the opposite of the previous battle. This time, the better performer was surpassed by the better singer. Alessandra’s voice is powerful and effortless, but Joe really connected with the material and showed real star potential. “That may be one of the most perfect vocals I have ever heard,” Blake said of Joe’s take on the Rihanna song. Yet when Joe became available, no one picked him up.
ADAM PICK: Alessandra
SHOULD’VE PICKED: Joe
MONTAGE: TEAM ADAM: CLARA HONG VS. REBEKAH SAMARIN (Adam picks Rebekah); TEAM BLAKE: GRANT GANZER vs. JOHN MARTIN (Blake picks Grant); TEAM BLAKE: JUSTIN JOHNES VS. TANNER LINFORD (Blake picks Tanner)
TEAM GWEN: MENLIK ZERGABACHEW VS. TROY RITCHIE, “Maneater”
OK, I really do want the "Voice” winner to be named Menlik Zergabachew. Never mind that Menlik seemed strong, but kind of disinterested, in this battle. Just imagine how much fun people will have spelling Zergabachew. But Troy’s performance was so magnetic that he was the clear winner.
GWEN PICK: Troy
SHOULD’VE PICKED: Troy (Pharrell steals Menlik)
