Super Bowl parties traditionally have been celeb-filled, guest-list-only, high-end affairs. This year’s crop certainly had their share of those, but there was also a move by many companies to offer its customers a taste of that A-list experience.
At the Beacon Theatre Friday night – amid screams of “We love you, Adam!” – Adam Levine and Maroon 5 performed for about 2,000 fans who won a JBL by Harman contest. The show, part of the company’s “Hear the Truth” campaign, featured People Magazine’s reigning Sexiest Man Alive and the band running through their biggest hits slightly modified, including a heavy metal opening to their reggae-pop hit “One More Night” and an industrial edge to their breakthrough “Harder to Breathe.”
About 30 minutes later and 20 blocks south at the Roseland Ballroom, The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach was reminiscing onstage about the last time the band played the historic venue set to close in April.
“This has been a special night for us,” Auerbach told the crowd of Citi cardholders at the show, the final concert in the company’s “Citi Presents Evenings with Legends” series leading up to the Super Bowl.
“It brings back a lot of memories,” he added, recalling how the Grammy-winning arena headliners last played Roseland in 2003 when they opened for Sleater-Kinney. Back then, they toured in a minivan and drove themselves from show to show, listening to Howard Stern on the radio. On Friday night, before their Roseland show, they played Stern’s birthday party at Hammerstein Ballroom.
Though the Black Keys’ sound has broadened and deepened over the years, especially on recent hits like “Tighten Up” and “Lonely Boy,” the way Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney made their finale “I Got Mine” sounded so massive as a simple duo showed how their creative spark still burns bright.
