After all the anxiety of Hurricane Irene, the MTV Video Music Awards should provide an entertaining outlet for a weekend of water-hoarding and go-bag prep. The show starts at 9 p.m. on MTV, VH1 and Logo, with the red carpet set to kick off at 8 p.m. We'll be here live-blogging and Tweeting @ndmusic then.

In the meantime, you can check out Backstage Pass pal Genetta Adams' look back at the awards of years past. You can see the view from the red carpet here. And you can still vote for the Best New Artist of the year here.

The nominees are:

Big Sean, “My Last”

Foster the People, “Pumped Up Kicks”

Kreayshawn, “Gucci Gucci”

Tyler the Creator, “Yonkers”

Wiz Khalifa, “Black and Yellow”

SHOULD WIN: Tyler the Creator. Tyler and the Odd Future crew are definitely the most creative of the bunch, though “Yonkers” is a NSFW, bug-infested bitter pill to swallow. Does that make it easier to root for the likable, gently indie, Beck-ish Foster the People? Maybe.

WILL WIN: Wiz Khalifa. Between mainstream hip-hop fans and Steelers fans voting, “Black and Yellow” will be hard to stop.
